Recently the HSE carried out an analysis of incidents reported under RIDDOR, involving PPE.  This identified that over 60% of the incidents reported related to misuse, mis-selection, lack of maintenance and lack of training in the use of suitable PPE. In a further 21% of incidents, PPE had failed to be considered at all!

J & K Ross is committed to helping and supporting its customers through well trained customer interfacing staff. As a result we are proud to announce that we are the first H&S distributor in the UK to have put all of our team through the demanding BSIF Safety Awareness Course and passed the Certificate of Safety Awareness, a level 3 qualification structured within the DfEE.

To gain the qualification, our team, including our MD Chris Ross, have passed both an examination and a practical in-field assessment to indicate they have knowledge and understanding of the duties and obligations of both customers and J&K Ross when selecting suitable PPE and Safety equipment.

Whilst we are committed to providing the highest levels of customer service, we are aware that the selection of suitable PPE and safety equipment is ultimately the responsibility of the customer (employer). In addition the customer must ensure that they have carried out the necessary risk assessments and where necessary that PPE has been assessed for suitability (this is very important as the law states that selection of suitable PPE and Safety equipment is always the responsibility of the customer (employer) even if they use a H&S consultant).

So what does the BSIF Certificate of Safety Awareness mean to our customers?

With all our customer interfacing staff holding the BSIF Certificate of Safety Awareness it is your assurance that we are a responsible health & Safety product supplier.

Being responsible means:

bullet
Our staff have an understanding of the legal requirements that our customers face when selecting suitable PPE & safety equipment
bullet
Our staff are diligent and understand the importance of asking further questions where necessary about the use and specification of the safety equipment being requested
bullet
Our staff regularly receive training about the products they sell
bullet
We are prepared to contact manufacturers and distributors of safety equipment on behalf of our customers to clarify specification or suitability
bullet
Our staff know their limitations on the advice and information they can give and are aware of our procedures for dealing with requests for advice or information beyond these limitations.
bullet
Our staff are authorised to refuse to supply equipment if they believe the equipment selected by the customer is totally unsuitable for the situation and could be putting the users health at risk
bullet
Our staff may offer our customers details of booklets and leaflets from the HSE to help them comply with H&S legislation and implement best practice H&S measures within their own companies

New internal processes have been implemented at J&K Ross to improve our already high levels of customer service to enable us to work with our customers to provide responsibly chosen PPE and Safety Equipment and help everyone stay within the law.

We take our duties very seriously... if the customer has identified PPE as the solution, it should be regarded as the last line of defence against the identified hazards in the workplace.

We will do everything we can to help our customers make an informed choice of suitable PPE and safety equipment.
